Appearance
Choose the app theme, a terminal color scheme or an imported iTerm2 or Windows Terminal scheme, the font, font size, cursor and scrollback.
kaiport follows the light or dark mode of your system by default. The look of the terminal – colors, font, cursor and scrollback – is set separately in Settings → Terminal. Every change applies right away to all open terminals, without a restart.
App theme
Settings → General → Theme decides whether the windows of kaiport are light or dark:
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| System | Follows the light or dark mode of your operating system (default). |
| Dark | Always dark. |
| Light | Always light. |
The theme covers the start window, the terminal windows with their panels, and the editor. The terminal itself keeps the colors of its color scheme, so a dark scheme stays dark in a light app.
Terminal color schemes
Pick a scheme in Settings → Terminal → Color scheme by clicking its preview. kaiport comes with these schemes:
| Scheme | Type |
|---|---|
| kaiport Dark (default) | dark |
| One Dark | dark |
| Dracula | dark |
| Nord | dark |
| Catppuccin Mocha | dark |
| Solarized Dark | dark |
| GitHub Light | light |
| Solarized Light | light |
Import iTerm2 and Windows Terminal schemes
- Open Settings → Terminal.
- Next to Import color scheme, click Import.
- Choose a scheme file:
- an iTerm2 scheme (
.itermcolors) - a Windows Terminal scheme (
.json): a single scheme object, or a whole settings file with aschemeslist – then kaiport takes the first scheme in it
- an iTerm2 scheme (
The imported scheme becomes active at once and appears in the list after the built-in schemes. It's named after the file (iTerm2) or after its name entry (Windows Terminal). If you import a scheme with the same name again, it replaces the earlier one. kaiport decides from the background color whether a scheme counts as dark or light, which matters for the editor colors.
Font
Settings → Terminal → Font sets the font of the terminal and the editor. The field suggests MesloLGS NF, JetBrainsMono Nerd Font, FiraCode Nerd Font, Hack Nerd Font, SF Mono, Menlo and Consolas, and you can type the name of any font installed on your computer. The Preview at the end of the section shows a sample prompt in the chosen font.
- MesloLGS NF is built into kaiport (regular, bold, italic and bold italic). It works without installing anything and is the default.
- Other fonts have to be installed on your computer. If a font isn't available, the terminal and the editor fall back to MesloLGS NF.
- Nerd Fonts are recommended: they contain the Powerline symbols and icons that many prompts use. You find them at nerdfonts.com.
The font only matters on your computer. Servers you connect to need no fonts installed.
Font size and line height
| Setting | Range | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Font size | 8 to 32 | 13 |
| Line height | 1 to 2, in steps of 0.05 | 1.2 |
You can also change the font size from the keyboard in any terminal window:
| Menu item | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| View → Zoom In | ⌘+Ctrl+ |
| View → Zoom Out | ⌘-Ctrl- |
| View → Actual Size | ⌘0Ctrl0 |
Each step changes the size by one point; Actual Size returns to 13. The zoom changes the Font size setting itself, so all terminal windows and the editor follow.
Cursor
- Cursor: Block (default), Bar or Underline.
- Cursor blinks: on by default.
Scrollback
Scrollback sets how many lines each terminal keeps for scrolling back: 500 to 50,000 in steps of 500, 5,000 by default. More lines use more memory per terminal. The search covers the whole scrollback, and Clear terminal empties it.
Ready for oh-my-zsh, powerlevel10k and Starship
Fancy prompts work without extra setup:
- The terminal identifies itself as
xterm-256colorand shows 256 colors and 24-bit true color. - It uses the character widths of Unicode 11, so icons and emoji line up.
- MesloLGS NF, the bundled font, is the font the powerlevel10k project recommends. It contains the Powerline separators and Nerd Font icons that agnoster, powerlevel10k and Starship draw.
Your shell configuration can recognize kaiport by the variable LC_TERMINAL=kaiport, together with LC_TERMINAL_VERSION. SSH servers pass LC_* variables on only if their AcceptEnv setting allows it.
Editor colors
The editor takes its colors from your terminal scheme as long as the scheme matches the app theme: a dark scheme in dark mode, a light scheme in light mode. If they don't match, the editor uses the default scheme of the current mode – kaiport Dark in dark mode, GitHub Light in light mode – so a light app never gets a black editor. Imported schemes count as well.
The editor also uses the terminal font and font size.
