File browser
Browse, open, edit, download, upload, rename and delete files over SFTP in the side panel of a terminal tab, right next to your SSH session.
The file browser shows the files of the session in the current tab, in a panel next to the terminal. On SSH connections it uses SFTP over the connection that is already open, so there is no second login. Storage connections such as FTP or S3 have their own two-pane transfer view instead.
Open the file browser
Press ⌘BCtrlB (View → Toggle Files) or click Files in the rail on the right. The panel takes the place of the AI Pilot panel; drag its left edge to make it wider. Click Files again or the Close button in the panel to hide it.
- The file browser starts in your home directory on the server, the directory you log in to. It doesn't follow
cdcommands in the terminal. - It needs a connected session. While the tab isn't connected, the panel shows no files.
- In a split tab, it shows the files of the focused pane's session.
On Windows and Linux, the terminal passes CtrlB to the shell while it has the focus. Use the Files button in the rail there.
Move around
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Double-click a folder | Opens the folder. |
| Parent folder (arrow up) | Goes one level up. |
| Path | The last levels of the current path. Click one to jump there. |
| Home | Goes back to your home directory. |
| Refresh | Reloads the current folder. |
| Filter field (Search…) | Shows only entries of the current folder whose name contains the text, regardless of upper and lower case. |
To switch the terminal to a folder, point at the folder and click Open in terminal. kaiport types cd with the path of the folder into the shell and presses Enter.
The file list
Folders come first, then files, both in alphabetical order. Hidden files (dotfiles) are listed too. Each row shows:
- an icon that shows the file type – kaiport knows more than 350 file types and well-known names such as
Dockerfile,Makefileorpackage.json; symbolic links carry a small arrow - the name
- the size (for files)
- the permissions, for example
rwxr-xr-x
When you point at a row, its actions appear in place of size and permissions:
| Action | Available for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Edit | Text files up to 2 MB | Opens the file in the editor. |
| Download | Files | Saves the file on your computer. |
| Open in terminal | Folders | Changes the shell to this folder. |
| Ask the AI about this file | Files and folders | Opens AI Pilot with a prepared request. |
| Rename | Files and folders | Asks for a new name. |
| Delete | Files and folders | Deletes after a confirmation. |
Select files
- Click a row to select it.
- ⌘Ctrl-click adds a row to the selection or removes it.
- Shift-click selects everything between the last clicked row and this one.
- Click an empty area of the list to clear the selection.
As soon as the selection contains files, a download button with their number appears next to the filter field.
Open and edit files
Double-click a file or click Edit in its row. Text files open in the editor – in the built-in editor window or, if you set it up, in an external editor. When you save, the file goes straight back to the server.
Some files are downloaded instead of opened:
- files with typical binary extensions: images, audio and video, archives, PDF and Office documents, fonts, databases and programs
- files larger than 2 MB
- files whose content turns out to be binary
Download files
- Click Download in a file's row, or select several files and click the download button next to the filter field.
- Choose a folder on your computer. The dialog starts in your Downloads folder and lets you create a new folder.
kaiport saves the files there. Only files can be downloaded, not folders.
Upload files
- Click Upload in the toolbar and choose one or more files, or
- drag files from Finder, Explorer or your file manager onto the list. The list shows Drop files here to upload.
The files go into the folder the file browser shows. A file with the same name on the server is replaced without asking. Folders can't be uploaded, only files.
The panel doesn't show a progress bar and doesn't reload by itself. Click Refresh to see the uploaded files.
Create, rename and delete
- New folder (the folder icon with a plus in the toolbar) asks for a name in the dialog Create new folder. Click Save.
- Rename in a row asks for the new name. Click Save.
- Delete in a row asks: “name” will be deleted on the target system. This cannot be undone. Click Delete to confirm.
If an action fails, for example because you lack the permission, the error appears in the list.
Ask AI Pilot about a file
AI Pilot is part of kaiport Pro. Click Ask the AI about this file (the sparkle icon) in a row. The AI Pilot panel opens with a prepared request that contains the full path: Look at /etc/nginx/nginx.conf and explain what this file does. Add details if you like and press Enter. To read the file, AI Pilot needs Settings → AI Pilot → Send file contents to the AI. See AI Pilot in the terminal and AI Pilot for files and storage.
