Updates
How kaiport from kaiport.dev finds new versions and installs them only when you agree, how the store versions update, manual checks and the changelog.
kaiport downloaded from kaiport.dev gets new versions from its download server get.kaiport.dev. When a new version is out, kaiport shows you what changed and installs it only when you agree. This page explains when kaiport checks for updates, what the update dialog offers and where you find the update status and the changelog.
Versions from the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store
If you installed kaiport from the Microsoft Store or the Mac App Store, the store delivers the updates, as for your other apps from there. The Mac App Store version has no updater of its own. The rest of this page is about the version from kaiport.dev.
How updates work
- Check at start: with Check for updates at start on, kaiport checks a few seconds after it starts. The setting is on by default.
- Daily check: while kaiport keeps running, it also checks once a day. This check runs even when the setting is off.
- Your decision: when there is a new version, the dialog Update available opens in the start window or the terminal window you are using. Nothing is downloaded until you click Update now.
- Skipped versions: a version you skipped doesn't come back with the automatic checks. A newer version does.
The Update available dialog
The dialog shows the new version, the version you are using and the release date, and below New in this version the list of changes.
| Button | What happens |
|---|---|
| Update now | kaiport downloads the update and shows the progress, for example “Downloading the update… 42 %”. Then it shows “kaiport is restarting…” and restarts into the new version. |
| Skip this version | Closes the dialog. The automatic checks no longer offer this version, and the changelog marks it as “skipped”. |
| Later | Closes the dialog. It appears again at the next check. |
Save open files in the editor before you click Update now, because kaiport restarts as soon as the download is complete. With Restore session on, your terminal windows and tabs open again after the restart.
When the update cannot be installed
If the installation fails, the dialog shows “The update could not be installed:” with the reason, and the link Download manually. It opens the installer for your system from get.kaiport.dev in your browser. Install it over the current version; your connections and settings stay in the data folder.
On macOS, only signed apps can install updates automatically. If kaiport can't update itself there, use Download manually.
Check for updates manually
- Open Settings → Updates and click Check for updates.
- On macOS, choose Help → Check for Updates… in the menu bar.
If there is a new version, the dialog Update available opens, even for a version you skipped. The result also appears in the status line in Settings → Updates, for example “kaiport is up to date.”
Settings → Updates
The Updates section of the settings shows the installed version (“Version …”), the status of the last check and when it ran (“Last checked …”). When a new version is available, Update now appears next to Check for updates. The switch Check for updates at start turns the check at start on or off.

| “kaiport is restarting…” | The download is complete; kaiport restarts and installs the update. |

Development builds
If you build and run kaiport from its source code, updates are off: the status says “Updates are off in development builds.”, and Check for updates is grayed out.
